Agios Spyridon Beach (Perithia)

Agios Spyridon Beach, sometimes written Agios Spiridon or Agios Spyridonas, is a beautiful sandy beach on the north-eastern coast of Corfu, close to Perithia and roughly halfway between Acharavi and Kassiopi. It should not be confused with the beach of the same name in Paleokastritsa on the other side of the island.

One of the biggest attractions of Agios Spyridon is its combination of soft sand, clear turquoise water and a wonderfully relaxed setting. The sea is generally shallow for quite some distance from the shore, with a gradual entry into the water, making this an especially popular choice for families with younger children and anyone who prefers calm, easy swimming.

The beach is relatively broad and open, with plenty of room to find your own patch of sand. Parts are organised during the summer season with sunbeds and parasols, while there is normally also space for visitors who prefer to bring their own towels or beach equipment. Tavernas, cafés and beach bars can be found close to the shoreline, so it is easy to spend an entire day here without having to travel elsewhere for food or refreshments. Seasonal water sports and other beach activities are also available in the area.

The water is usually beautifully clear, with shades ranging from pale turquoise in the shallows to deeper blue further out. Because the beach faces towards the open waters of the Corfu Channel, conditions can change when the wind picks up, particularly with stronger northerly winds, but on calm days the bay is excellent for swimming.

One of the things that makes Agios Spyridon particularly special is its natural surroundings. Immediately behind the beach lies the Antinioti Lagoon, one of northern Corfu's most important wetland environments and part of a protected Natura 2000 area. Reeds, sand dunes, olive groves and Mediterranean vegetation surround the lagoon, providing habitat for a variety of birds and other wildlife. It gives this part of the coastline a much less developed and more natural character than many of Corfu's larger resorts.

Visitors who enjoy walking can combine a beach visit with exploring the tracks around the lagoon and surrounding countryside. The nearby coastal landscape is particularly attractive during the quieter months and early or late in the day, when the beach and wetland take on a much more peaceful atmosphere.

Close to the beach you will also find the small Church of Agios Spyridon, from which the beach and surrounding area take their name.

Despite its peaceful setting, Agios Spyridon is not isolated. Acharavi is around 5 to 6 km away and Kassiopi around 8 km away, giving visitors easy access to a much wider selection of shops, restaurants and services. Corfu Town is approximately 43 km away by road.

Access is easiest by car, scooter or quad, with the beach reached by a paved road from the main north coast road. Parking is generally available along the road and in the immediate area, although spaces can become busier during the height of summer. Public transport options exist in the wider Perithia area, but services and routes can vary seasonally, so it is worth checking the current Green Buses timetable before travelling.

Who is Agios Spyridon Beach best for?

Agios Spyridon is an excellent choice if you are looking for a proper sandy beach without the intensely developed feel of some of Corfu's larger resorts. Families will appreciate the shallow entry into the sea, while couples and visitors wanting a slower beach day will enjoy the relaxed surroundings.

Nature lovers have the added attraction of the Antinioti Lagoon directly behind the beach, while anyone staying around Acharavi, Kassiopi, Perithia or the north-east of Corfu can reach it very easily.

It may be less suitable if you are looking for a lively beach club atmosphere or a beach surrounded by a large selection of shops and nightlife. Agios Spyridon is much more about sand, sea, nature and a laid-back day by the water.

Corfu & Beyond tip

Don't just visit for a quick swim. Give yourself time to explore the area around Antinioti Lagoon as well. The contrast between the sandy beach and the protected wetland immediately behind it is what makes Agios Spyridon different from many of Corfu's other beaches. If possible, stay until later in the afternoon when the day-trippers begin to leave and the whole area becomes noticeably quieter.
