Alipa Beach

Alipa Beach, sometimes written Alypa Beach, is a small and picturesque beach in Paleokastritsa on Corfu's west coast. Tucked beside the little Alipa Harbour, it combines the dramatic scenery for which Paleokastritsa is famous with a much more intimate beach setting than the resort's main beach at Agios Spyridon.

The beach sits at the foot of the green hills and rocky headlands that surround Paleokastritsa, with beautifully clear water and views across the small harbour. Fishing boats, private boats and excursion vessels are a regular part of the scenery, giving Alipa a distinctive beach-and-marina atmosphere.

The shoreline is relatively small and consists mainly of pebbles, shingle and patches of sand. It is not the sort of beach where you will find hundreds of sunbeds or a huge stretch of open sand, but that is part of its appeal. Alipa works particularly well for visitors who prefer a smaller cove and want to combine some beach time with exploring Paleokastritsa.

The water is typically clear and intensely blue-green, particularly on calm sunny days. Like several beaches around Paleokastritsa, the sea can feel noticeably cooler than on Corfu's east coast. The rocky areas around the bay can provide good opportunities for snorkelling, although swimmers should always remain aware of the boat traffic associated with the neighbouring harbour.

Facilities directly on the beach are more limited than at the main Paleokastritsa beach, but you are only a short walk from restaurants, cafés, tavernas, shops and other resort facilities, making it easy to include Alipa as part of a full day exploring the area.

Alipa Harbour

One of the defining features of Alipa is its small harbour, which sits immediately beside the beach.

Fishing boats share the harbour with excursion boats, rental boats and visiting vessels, creating a constantly changing view across the bay. It is one of the main departure points in Paleokastritsa for visitors wanting to explore the coastline by sea.

The harbour gives Alipa a very different character from the neighbouring beaches. Rather than feeling like a traditional resort beach, it feels more like a small working harbour with a beach attached, and watching the boats come and go is part of the experience.

During the height of summer the harbour can become particularly active during the middle of the day as boat trips depart and return.

Exploring Paleokastritsa by Boat

Alipa is one of the best places in Paleokastritsa to start a boat trip or hire a small boat.

The coastline surrounding Paleokastritsa is filled with dramatic cliffs, sea caves, secluded bays and beaches that cannot easily be reached by road. Excursion boats operate from the harbour, while small self-drive boats are also available from local operators.

From here you can explore famous stretches of coastline and reach remote beaches such as Paradise Beach, also known as Chomi, along with other hidden coves accessible primarily from the sea.

Even if you are only spending a few hours in Paleokastritsa, seeing the coastline from a boat gives you a completely different perspective of the area's towering cliffs and extraordinary water colours.

A Quieter Alternative in Paleokastritsa

Paleokastritsa can become extremely busy during the summer, particularly around Agios Spyridon Beach, the monastery road and the main tourist areas.

Alipa is only a short distance away but can feel less dominated by traditional beach activity. The beach itself is small, so it can still fill up quickly, but its position beside the harbour gives it a slightly different atmosphere from the main bay.

If you arrive early in the morning, you may find Alipa particularly enjoyable before the majority of excursion boats and day visitors arrive.

It also makes an excellent place for a quick swim before or after a boat trip rather than necessarily being somewhere you spend an entire day lying on the beach.

Getting There

Alipa Beach is located in Paleokastritsa, approximately 23 km from Corfu Town.

The journey by car normally takes around 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic, although summer congestion approaching Paleokastritsa can add considerably to journey times.

Alipa is centrally located within the resort and can easily be reached on foot from many parts of Paleokastritsa. There is parking in the surrounding area, although spaces can become difficult to find during the busiest periods of July and August.

Paleokastritsa is also served by Corfu's Green Bus network, making Alipa one of the easier beaches on the west coast to visit without hiring a car. The nearest bus stops are on the main road through Paleokastritsa, with the beach and harbour only a short walk away.

If you are visiting during peak season, arriving early in the morning is one of the easiest ways to avoid both traffic and parking problems.

Who is Alipa Beach Best For?

Alipa is particularly good for couples, swimmers and visitors planning to explore Paleokastritsa by boat.

It is a good choice if you like smaller beaches and want to be close to all the attractions and facilities of Paleokastritsa without necessarily sitting on the busiest main beach.

Snorkellers can enjoy exploring the rocky areas around the bay, although the presence of boats means you should remain within appropriate swimming areas and stay alert to harbour traffic.

Families can certainly enjoy Alipa, but those wanting a large sandy beach with plenty of room for children to play may prefer Agios Spyridon Beach nearby.

Alipa is also unlikely to be the first choice for someone who simply wants to hire a sunbed and remain on the same beach all day. Its real strength is as part of the wider Paleokastritsa experience: have a swim, explore the harbour, take a boat trip and discover the coastline.

Corfu & Beyond Tip

Use Alipa as your gateway to the sea.

The beach is lovely, but the real reason to seek out Alipa is the harbour beside it. Arrive early, enjoy a swim while the area is still relatively quiet and then take a boat trip or hire a small boat to explore the caves and hidden beaches around Paleokastritsa.

If you have time afterwards, walk across to Agios Spyridon Beach and the Paleokastritsa Monastery to experience another side of one of Corfu's most spectacular coastal areas.

And remember that Alipa is an active harbour. Keep an eye out for boats when swimming, particularly during the busy summer months.
