Alykes Potamou Beach

Alykes Potamou Beach, also commonly referred to as Alykes Potamos Beach, is a quiet sandy beach on Corfu's east coast, just a few kilometres north-west of Corfu Town and close to the village of Potamos. Its convenient location, shallow water and relatively peaceful atmosphere make it a useful option for visitors who want a beach day without travelling far from the island's capital.

It is important not to confuse Alykes Potamou with Alykes Lefkimmi Beach in the south of Corfu. Alykes Potamou lies immediately outside Corfu Town, while Alykes Lefkimmi is more than 40 km further south.

The beach stretches for roughly half a kilometre and is predominantly sandy, although there can be small pebbles and natural material along sections of the shoreline. The beach is fairly narrow compared with many of Corfu's larger resort beaches, but it has a pleasantly open feel and is backed in places by grass, trees and low Mediterranean vegetation.

One of the biggest attractions of Alykes Potamou is the gently shelving sandy seabed. The sea remains relatively shallow well away from the shore, making it particularly suitable for families, paddling and anyone who prefers an easy entry into the water. A local environmental report records a depth of only around five metres approximately 75 metres from shore, illustrating just how gradual the seabed can be.

The beach has a mixture of organised and more natural sections. Around the developed part of the coastline you can find sunbeds, parasols, refreshments and seasonal water activities, while other stretches are considerably simpler and quieter. This gives visitors the option of having facilities nearby or finding somewhere less developed to put down a towel.

Close to Corfu Town

One of Alykes Potamou's biggest advantages is its location.

The beach is only around 4 km from the centre of Corfu Town, making it one of the easiest coastal options for anyone staying in or around the capital who does not want to spend an hour travelling across the island.

This also makes it a useful option for visitors who have only part of a day available. You can explore Corfu Town in the morning and still be beside the sea within a relatively short journey.

Despite its proximity to the town and port, Alykes Potamou generally feels much quieter than you might expect. It is used by locals as well as visitors and does not have the atmosphere of a large purpose-built holiday resort.

The Potamos River and Natural Surroundings

Alykes Potamou lies beside the Potamos River estuary, with the river reaching the sea close to the beach. The bay and river mouth are also recognised within WWF Greece's inventory of Corfu's island wetlands.

Trees and vegetation behind sections of the beach help give the area a greener and more natural character than many beaches located this close to Corfu Town.

The landscape here is not as dramatic as Paleokastritsa or the rugged west coast, but its appeal is different. Alykes Potamou offers a flat, open shoreline with views across the water towards the hills and mountains of north-east Corfu and the mainland beyond.

Organised and Quieter Sections

Alykes Potamou gives you a choice between having facilities nearby and finding a quieter stretch.

The area associated with Kerkyra Blue Hotel N' Spa has organised beach facilities, while other sections of the coastline remain much simpler. Sunbeds, parasols, food and drink facilities and seasonal activities are available around the organised area.

For the 2026 season, the managed Alykes Potamou section at Kerkyra Blue Hotel N' Spa is included on Greece's official Blue Flag list.

If you prefer somewhere quieter, walking away from the organised section gives the beach a noticeably more local and undeveloped feel.

Getting There

Alykes Potamou is approximately 4 km from central Corfu Town, making the journey considerably shorter than travelling to most of the island's famous resort beaches.

By car, the beach is reached from the main Corfu Town to Paleokastritsa road, with the public beach lying a few hundred metres from the main road. Parking is available in the wider area.

It is also one of the easier beaches to reach using Corfu's City Bus network. Routes serving the Potamos area include the No. 4 Potamos route, while other services run along the main coastal road. Bus routes and timetables can change, so it is always worth checking the current Corfu City Bus timetable before travelling.

From the main road, depending on where you get off, there can be a short walk of approximately 300 to 400 metres to reach the public beach.

Who is Alykes Potamou Beach Best For?

Alykes Potamou is particularly suitable for families and visitors staying in or around Corfu Town.

The gradual entry into the sea and sandy seabed make it a good option for younger children, while its location means you do not need to commit to a long journey simply to spend a few hours beside the water.

It is also a good choice for travellers who prefer quieter, less tourist-focused beaches. You are unlikely to find the dramatic scenery of the west coast or the large choice of beachfront tavernas found in major resorts, but that is not really what Alykes Potamou is about.

If your priority is a huge golden beach, spectacular cliffs or a full day of resort entertainment, there are stronger options elsewhere on Corfu.

Alykes Potamou is better suited to those looking for shallow water, convenience, plenty of space and a relaxed swim close to Corfu Town.

Corfu & Beyond Tip

Don't overlook Alykes Potamou just because it is close to Corfu Town.

Many visitors automatically travel much further across the island when they want a beach day, but Alykes Potamou can be a very convenient option if you are staying in town, arriving from the port or only have a few hours available.

If you want facilities, stay closer to the organised section. If you prefer somewhere more peaceful, walk further along the shoreline and find one of the quieter stretches.

It can also work particularly well as a half-day beach visit combined with Corfu Town, allowing you to enjoy both the historic centre and some time beside the sea without spending much of the day travelling.
