Chalikounas Beach

A long wild sandy beach between the Ionian Sea and Lake Korission, renowned for wind, open space, kitesurfing and protected nature.

Chalikounas Beach has a sand shoreline. Easy road access along the long sandbar, although the setting remains largely undeveloped.

The beach is essentially unorganised. Food or drink is available at the beach or immediately nearby. Seasonal watersports are available.

What to expect

The shoreline is predominantly sand. The sandy sections are comfortable for anyone planning to spend several hours on the beach. The generous stretch of shoreline gives you more room to spread out than at Corfu's smaller coves and makes it a good option if you enjoy beach walks as well as swimming.

Swimming and sea conditions

Waves can develop when the weather changes, so it is worth judging the sea on the day rather than assuming it will always be flat. It is less naturally suited to very young children than Corfu's broad, shallow sandy beaches.

Who this beach suits

This beach is particularly well suited to kitesurfing, windsurfing, nature lovers and long walks. Its quieter character is part of the appeal, particularly if you want to get away from the island's busier resort beaches. If you can stay into the evening, it is also a good setting for watching the sunset.

This is essentially an unorganised beach, so it suits visitors who are happy with a simpler, more natural setup. A small number of seasonal beach bars operate along the long beach. The exposed conditions make this a major windsurfing and kitesurfing beach.

Getting there and practical information

Informal parking is available along the long dirt road behind the beach. Easy road access along the long sandbar, although the setting remains largely undeveloped. The beach is flat from the access road, although deep sand can be difficult for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There is no direct public bus to Chalikounas Beach.

Planning your visit

Early morning or later afternoon is a particularly good time to enjoy the quieter atmosphere and softer light. If sunset is one of the reasons you are visiting, plan to stay beyond the main beach-going hours rather than leaving in mid-afternoon.

Is it the right beach for you?

Choose it if peace, scenery and a more natural shoreline matter more to you than organised facilities. Check the sea conditions when you arrive, particularly on windier days.
