Central Corfu
History, Culture & the Heart of Corfu
Explore Central Corfu
Central Corfu is the cultural and historic heart of the island and includes Corfu Town, one of the most important destinations anywhere on Corfu.
The Old Town is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and reflects centuries of European influence in its fortifications, architecture, narrow kantounia, squares and public buildings. Major sights include the Old Fortress, New Fortress, Liston and Spianada, while the wider central area brings together places including Garitsa, Anemomylos, Paleopolis, Mon Repos and Kanoni.
Kanoni provides one of Corfu's most recognisable views towards Vlacherna Monastery and Pontikonisi, while further inland visitors can discover traditional villages and landmarks including the Achilleion at Gastouri.
Central Corfu is particularly suited to visitors interested in history, architecture, museums, food, shopping and culture. It is also an excellent area for travellers without a car because Corfu Town serves as the island's principal transport hub.
